What it means to be ding free

Belonging to a national ATM network means credit union members have access to thousands of surcharge-free ATMs from sea to shining sea.  Unfortunately 43% of Canadians believe that credit unions aren't part of a collective ATM network at all.  Thankfully, that's about to change.

Right now, credit unions from Western, Central and Eastern Canada are banding together to help spread the ding free ATM message across the country.  We've even launched a ding free locator app for members to find the nearest surcharge-free ATM - wherever they are.  But the next step is yours.

What members should know:

• Members have always enjoyed access to thousands of ding free ATMs across Canada (an ATM network bigger than most banks).
• "ding free" means that members pay no surcharges at credit union and other participating ATMs across Canada for withdrawals, deposits and balance inquiries.
• A surcharge (or convenience fee) is a fee charged by an ATM owner at the time of the transaction and appears on the ATM receipt.  A surcharge ranges from $1 to $3, and comes with a warning screen before the ATM transaction is complete.
• Surcharges are not the same as transaction or account fees, which would appear on a member's monthly statement - i.e. when a member exceeds the limits of a package account that comes with a fixed amount of free transactions per month.

What members should do:

• Download the ding free locator app for smartphones (available for Apple, Android, Windows and BlackBerry) and select their credit union.
• Look for the ding free decal on participating credit union ATMs.
• Visit ding-free.ca to learn more.

ATMs are a preferred banking channel for most Canadians, and access is important.  Join us in raising awareness of ding free, and help us educate more people about the benefits of doing business with credit unions. 

A National Campaign for Credit Unions

Across the country, hundreds of credit unions are getting behind the ding free message and doing their part to help spread the word among members and non-members alike.

For credit unions belonging to the ACCULINK network, there are over 1,800 ding free ATMs from sea to sea for members to access.  For credit unions on THE EXCHANGE network as well, this number jumps to over 2,400 ATMs.

Adding to this convenience, our new ATM locator app for smartphones makes finding the nearest ding free ATM a breeze for members on the go.  It's as easy as installing the app, choosing your credit union, and navigating to the ding free ATM closest to you.
